What is a fade?
A fade blends your hair from longer on top to very short down the sides and back, so the length changes gradually with no hard line. A skin fade, also called a bald fade, goes all the way down to the skin.
The fades
- Low fade
- Starts low, just above the ear, so the change in length is subtle. A good pick when you want a clean look without a big contrast.
- Mid fade
- Starts around the temples, about halfway up the sides. A balance between the low and the high.
- High fade
- Starts higher, a couple of inches above the ear, so more of the sides are cut short. The boldest of the three.
- Taper fade
- A softer version that shortens the hair more gradually and keeps the shortest lengths at the sideburns and neckline. A low taper fade starts low and leaves more hair.
- Skin fade
- Fades all the way down to the bare skin for the sharpest contrast.
Fade or taper?
A fade goes very short at the bottom, sometimes to the skin. A taper shortens the hair more gradually and usually leaves the sides longer, for a softer, more classic finish. If you are not sure which suits you, ask your barber.
How to ask for the cut you want
- 01Say where the fade should start: low, mid or high.
- 02Say how short it should get at the bottom: down to the skin, or a clipper length.
- 03Say what you want on top.
- 04Bring a photo if you have one.
- 05Ask for a line up to finish the edges.
Keeping it fresh
A fade looks best while the contrast is sharp, and that softens as your hair grows. Ask your barber how often they suggest a touch-up for your cut. Between haircuts, a Line Up / Shape Up is $20.
